Individual:
Jacob (Joggli) Hagman and his wife Verena (Frena) Meyer of Eidberg, near Winterthur are the earliest known ancestors of the Mennonite Hackman and Hockman pioneers of Pennsylvania and Virginia. The names of their children appear in the records of the Reformed Church of Oberwinterthur.
The village of Eidberg, several miles southeast of the city of Winterthur, in Canton Zurich, Switzerland, was home to about a dozen families in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The earliest records for Eidberg date from 1586 when it was included in the newly established parish of Oberwinterthur. The Parish of Seen was carved out of Oberwinterthur in 1649 and Eidberg was attached to Seen. Records for the village are therefore found in both parishes.
Just when the Hagman family settled at Eidberg is not known, but the family is not extensive enough to indicate that the name originated there or that they lived there before the sixteenth century. In addition to Jacob and Verena, two other couples from Eidberg are mentioned in the Oberwinterthur records before 1600. There was a Heinrich Hagman and wife , Elsbeth Reiff, who had two daughters baptized in 1589 and 1591. There was also a Hans Hagman and wife, Eva Koblet, who had a daughter baptized in 1588. Jacob Hagman, a Taufer from Eidberg, had three children baptized between 1611 and 1617; including a son, Hans, born in 1613, who later lived in nearby Schottikon. This Jacob could have been a son of Heinrich or Hans, but no further record of them can be found. However, a clear line of descent for the American Hackmans and Hockmans can be established from Jacob and Verena of Eidberg through their son Hans (From the Rhine to the Shenandoah; Vol III, Daniel W. Bly, Gateway Press; Baltimore, Maryland, 2002, p. 83).
