Thomas Jefferson Welty, an early worker for railroad land sales in the vicinity of Ponca, Nebraska, came to Washington State shortly after statehood with his wife Ella and three surviving children. Civic responsibility and fraternal tradition blended in his family, and he kept the first known history of his branch of the family in a small black notebook (the basis of many of the records in this file).T J's roots in the Pennsylvania Dutch regions of Somerset and Westmoreland Counties, Pennsylvania connect him to numerous cousins throughout the United States.
