Abraham Lincoln once remarked that his mother, Nancy Hanks, came from an undistinguished family. One resents that a bit when it is your own he was talking about. Florence Crotty came from Gauley Bridge Virginia before West Virginia seceded and rejoined the Union. She and her family were members of the peaceful Society of Friends during the bloodiest conflict the nation has ever known. In other ways too she was a woman of contradictions. She married a disabled veteran of the late war, lived in the vicinity of Greenup Kentucky and Hanging Rock Ohio for most of her adult life, and died at a very early age. Her sister, consigned to the poorhouse at one point, would become the grandmother of a future Governor of Ohio.
