Mention the American West, and thoughts may drift quite naturally to Salt Lake City and the Mormon church. Images come to mind including plural marriage, extended kinship, the secret work of the temples. But there is much good to be found in the great basin kingdom as well. The women, Stegner reminds us, were simply incredible. The formative effects of the Mormon Trail are undeniable. The economic impacts are considerable. And the theological evolution is certainly worth the time and trouble for the serious student of world religions.From this crucible, Henry Grover emerged. Born at the middle of the 19th century into a plural marriage, he left Salt Lake and North Ogden with his mother and her new husband, Henry's half brother. Following several round trips between California and Montana, Henry and his family finally settled in the Bitterroot Valley, where his branch of the family abandoned Mormonism for Methodism and where he and many of his children are buried.Roots of this family pass through several popular jurisdictions in New England.
A word to the Mayflower enthusiast: the linkage of Margaret Freeman to the families of Freeman, Perry, Burgess, Taber, Warren and Cooke has not been proved to the satisfaction of the Society.
