California attracted many for love of gold, economic opportunity, land, and freedom. The McMurrys, natives of Tennessee but of Scots-Irish roots, probably came cross-country by wagon in 1863 for all of these reasons. Avoiding the American Civil War may have been another motive. Jonathan had taken an Indiana wife in Illinois and started a family, and with brother Samuel ended up in Inyo County, California, the heart of borax country. Over time borax became the family industry, with son-in-law Henry driving a 20-mule team to the mines and with others having a stake in both mining and ranching. Earthquakes, epidemics, and economics all played a role in the family's history. Numerous descendants of the McMurry clan now live throughout the American West.
