We are necropolitans. Our persistent hobby of collecting grave marker photographs and wandering through cemeteries has led to a lengthy list of focus people, who all reflect Pacific Northwest history in some way. . (1) First, our Civil War veterans (this file replaces the "Pacific Northwest Civil War Vets" file which was on GenCircles for 3 years). Of the millions of soldiers who served in the American Civil War, close to 10,000 moved to the territory and state of Washington following the war's end. Many brought their families. War widows came with sons and daughters. And Civil War era individuals who had nothing to do with the war, except that they lived through the perilous times in which the war occurred, also came. A portion of our research on these people is included here. Just because a name appears here, do NOT assume that the individuals had Civil War service. In some cases service has been verified through Federal or State sources, with one or more footnotes. Always do your own research as well, because this file is not proof...it is a series of clues for you to enjoy. . (2) Persons buried in cemeteries which have been closed are another focus group. Several former cemeteries, including the Seattle Cemetery, the Bellevue-Midlakes Pioneer Cemetery, the original Holy Cross Cemetery in Seattle, the Snohomish-Pilchuck Cemetery, and others have been an object of our research. . (3) More recently, a systematic study of Issei and Nisei families of the pre-World War II Pacific Rim states has been undertaken, and there will be periodic updates to this group throughout 2006 and 2007. . (4) Washington deaths prior to 1940 are of great importance, and many death records will be found here. . (5) Finally, an assortment of cemetery records pertaining to historic cemeteries or cemeteries "close to home" have been entered. For the women in these records, please see the notes. . Families are sometimes sketchy, and once in a while are downright wrong. Many details will be corrected based on SmartMatches and YOUR input! As relationships and many dates are estimated, feel free to contact the file holders if you have better information to contribute. Leaving Post-It notes to records is not advised. .
