Hi David,
I have finally gotten around to looking at the information you sent, and based on the marriage record of Susan JAMES in 1858 to Robert McLEOD, I would say that it appears Susan was his mother, and not her sister Sara
As you can see in Nelson's death record, his mother was identified as Sarah JAMES: http://www.sos.mo.gov/TIF2PDFConsumer/DispPDF.aspx?fTiff=/archives/DeptofHealth/Death/1937/00039345.TIF&Fln50388.pdf
The death certificate information was provided by Nelson's son-in-law, Wilson LEWIS.
I will change my record to identify Susan JAMES as the mother of Nelson McLEOD. Is it all right with you if I cite your gedcom file as a reference?
I am wondering now if Nelson left home as a young boy because his mother may have died? According to Turk LEWIS, "He ran away from home when he was 8 or 9, and never went back. Got a job maintaining the fire in a lumber camp 24/7, and the loggers educated him."
It appears those loggers did a good job of educating Nelson. He went on to become the President of his own lumber company.
Turk, do you have any comment on this?
