“Biographical Sketch of Edith Eveline Riddle Grover” by Mary
Blodgett Morris:
Edith Eveline was about 11 years old when her parents, John and
Elizabeth Riddle, lived outside Nauvoo, Illinois, at Liberty.
Their crops were destroyed by mobs, 1844. Edith Eveline Riddle
and companions were washing clothes in the Mississippi River
when the mobsters came down to the river and washed off their
blackened faces and were bragging about killing the Prophet
Joseph Smith. She and her companions hid from the mobsters and
were not discovered.
