This is what I found on Cuthbert from the 1840 census. I?m sure you already have it. Source-McCracken County Library - Microfilm Collection - 1840 Illinois Census - Randolph County, ILL.
Cuthbert S. Crain ? Head of Household
1 ? male under five 1 ? male 20/30 1 ? male 30/40 This is probably a brother, possibly Andrew
1 ? female under five 1 ? female 15/20
My thoughts ? if Cuthbert married about 20 then he is the male 20/30 ? Elizabeth is the female 15/20 ? say she is 19 ? Jincy would be the female under five ? she would have been born about 1839. Sarah was born about 1841, so would not have been included. The male under five could have died as an infant and I have no idea who the male 30/40 is. Two of the household listed occupation as agriculture. That would have been Cuthbert and the 30/40-year-old male who might have been a hired hand. by Randy Crain
I now think the other older male in Cuthbert's house is his brother, possibly Andrew
Guardianship papers for Jency Cassandra and Sarah J. Crain dated 23 April 1849, giving custody of the girls to Moses and Elizabeth McConnell. I believe that Elizabeth is the former Elizabeth Bilderback Crain, widow of Cuthbert.
Cuthbert's estate was administered in 1842 by James Crain, his brother. Many items sold to James Crain, AJ Crain, and Elizabeth Crain. Also Ephriam Bilderback, who I think is the father of Elizabeth.

Dated April 15, 1843
James Crain Admin. of Cuthbert S. Crain Decd. VS Elizabeth Crain, Now Elizabeth McConnel, Moses McConnell, now husband of the said Elizabeth and Ephrain Bilderback.
It concerned a Note for $260. given by Elizabeth and Ephrain Bilderback dated April 1, 1842 and due in 12 months.
These names were mentioned in Cuthbert s probate - John-James H-Andrew Jackson-Hall
In searching for dates in the probate of Cuthbert I found the document making James administrator. It is dated Mar 8, 1842. On the title page of that document, at the bottom, it reads "Decd. Jan 28, 1842" this has to be the date Cuthbert died.
Cuthbert bought items at the estate sale of his father, Benjamin 30 Mar 1829 although I cannot find the family in the 1830 census.
Property Tax paid in 1841 by Cuthbert and in 1843 by James Crain. Tax was also paid in 1845 by James Crain.
In 1838 Cuthbert purchased SE 1/4 of section 23 from Wiley Hickerson HICKERSON WYLIE SESE 23 07S 06W 3 08/03/1837 RANDOLPH
Cuthbert's land was sold, Aug 24, 1849, to Moses McConnell to settle the estate bill. I have the document.
