Text: My theory. John and Susannah moved their family to Randolph County in 1805. There is a J. Crain in the 1807 census. There is no other person that this could be but John. James and John (son of John) are counted in the census. The birth date of John (son) is in conflict because census only counted males over 21. I have a birth date of 1791 for John Jr. and it would have to be before 1786. Son Squire is in the census also, born about 1785. Sometime about 1808, John died and the family had no patriarch. So the oldest son, Benjamin moved his family from Knox County to Randolph County to take care of the family. This is why there are no further records of John, he was dead. They assumed that since Benjamin was older, he was the father of the clan.
There are court records of a Susannah Crain in 1810. There are the records of Morison's Store where a Widow Crain purchased items between 1809 and 1812. After 1812 her account stopped and was closed. Susannah died. Now this all speculation but at least it fits, well most of it. Genealogy is not all facts some time you have to go out on a limb. There is an over 45 year old female living with Joel Crain in the 1810 census, this would be Susannah, his mother. In 1820 there is an over 45 year old female living with Benjamin, probably his mother, Susannah

James and Squire Crain were witnesses for Susannah in her court case against Mary Grimes. Also called was Betsy Crain, probably the wife of James.
In the 1759 tax list of Rowan County, North Carolina are John Scott and James Scott both could be Susannah's father.
I think that Susannah died about 1825, the date that Joel paid off his account at Morrisons.
