No other record of John Crain in Randolph, must have died after 1807. Would have been about 70 years old.
Have Headright Land Grant and Survey dated 17 March 1786. Land was surneyed in 1784 and John was given possession of the land June 1784 in the Wilkes County Land Court. See John Crain file.
From the 1807 Indiana Territory Census : We find J. Crane, Jack Crane, James Crane and lqure Crane(Squire?). According to all we know, John Jr. would have only been 16 at the time and therefore not listed. We believe these men to be Joel, John Sr., James, and Squire. All other Crane men who came to Randolph Co. would have been underage at that time.
The 1810 census of Randolph County has the family of John Crain, with Susannah still alive.
Land Court held in Wilkes County, GA June 1784 John Crain took oath to Headright Grant along with William. Ambrose and Joel were in that court in the April 1784 session. Went to Wilkes County 17-18-19 December. Search the courthouse and local library for records, took pictures of land around where John lived.

There's a number of letters of inquiry from different relatives of mine who were DAR members. The one letter from my Oregon branch , written July 23, 1929 to the Pension Department, asks for information on John Crain, John Benjamin Crain and Benjamin Crain. They also relate the Walton connection saying that the wife Mildred Walton was the sister of George Walton the first governor of GA and signer of the Declaration. We know this Walton connection is NOT true. In different letters/applications they have her as a niece. I think cousin may be the right connection.
The reply was dated October 1929 saying that it was 'John Crane' and stating that nothing is known of the family.
Another relative, a US senator from Oregon also called about the same thing and a like letter was written to him on Jan 8, 1929.
In another inquiry it was stated that his wife's name was Susannah the same as his daughter and that he had 9 children. Julia H.
As Peggy has suggested I have removed William, Betsy, and Elenor as children of John and Susannah, at this time 12 Sep 2002 we have found nothing to confirm them as children, if we do will add back in.

William H. Crain was the son of James Crain, who, in turn, was the son of John Crain. This John Crain brought his family to Randolph County around 1800 and settled in Rockwood Precinct.
There are no Crain's in the 1806 census of Randolph County found on line at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sdorris/1806terr.html

John Crain/Benjamin Crain
It has long been a tradition in our family that John Benjamin Crain married Mildred Walton and sometime around 1800 moved his wife and thirteen children to Randolph County, Illinois. This John Crain was the son of Ambrose and Elizabeth of Amelia County, Virginia. Records of John can be found in Granville County, North Carolina where he was a resident in the house of Ambrose Crain. I never doubted the belief until I found the following marriage. On March 16, 1767, in Rowan County, North Carolina John Crain married Susannah Scott. This record would change my conviction in the family tradition. I followed the family of Ambrose and Elizabeth through Rowan County, Surry County, and on to Wilkes County, North Carolina where they remained until 1784, when they moved again to Wilkes County, Georgia.
The first documentation that I found of John Crain in Georgia was the Land Court Minutes of 1784. The first session of that year was held on 05 January 1784. The significance of this court was that each individual that was granted a Head Right of 200 acres had to swear an oath to the Stare of Georgia to obtain his grant. This court met several times each year. Joel Crain is listed in the April session as well as Ambrose. William and John Crain are listed in the June session. This book is located in the Wilkes County, GA courthouse, Probate Office.
I also obtained a copy of the survey of the land granted to John Crain. The warrant for this land was issued 09 June 1784 and executed 02 September 1784. The land was bounded on the East by land owned by William Crain and on the North by land owned by Samuel Safford all other sides were vacant. This is the land that John and Susannah lived on for 10 years. On 04 November 1794 John Crain and his wife Susannah sold this 200-acre tract to Nathan Gunnals for the sum of one hundred pounds Sterling. The description of the land in the deed matches the survey exactly. In a subsequent sale of the land by Nathan Gunnels it is noted that the land was surveyed and granted to John Crain, 17 March 1786. This is the date listed on the Headright Grant located in Book III, page 579, microfilm drawer 52, box 23, located at the Department of Archives & History, Atlanta, GA.
The Wilkes County Tax Records 1785-1805 by Frank Parker Hudson have no records of John Crain after the sale of his land in 1794. It was suggested that the records of Oglethorpe County be searched because part of Wilkes County was put into it in 1794. According to the text of the tax records the area, which was Militia District Q in Wilkes County, was never put into Oglethorpe County. The area that was incorporated into Oglethorpe County was North of the Long Creek Branch of the Broad River. None of the John Crain family lived in that area. Using a modern map of Wilkes County and the survey plot, I believe that I can locate these 200 acres. It would be approximately 1 mile NNE of the town of Mallorysville, GA on Clark?s Creek. As suggested I also searched the 1795 Oglethorpe County Records and no John Crain is found in those records.
The next record of John Crain is found in Knox County, TN when on 16 November 1795; John Crain purchases 200 acres from Isaac Mayfield. This land was located on the East side of the Clinch River near or South of Clinton, TN. I have a copy of this deed but so far have not been able to read it. I do know the land was located next to Thomas Gillespie. James Crain, son of John was taxed in Anderson County, TN in 1802 along with Burrell Hudson, John?s son in law. John Crain was appointed to the grand jury in January 1800 and again in 1803. In 1804 John Crain is taxed for his land on the Clinch River. On 01 May 1805, John Crain sold his land to West Walker. James Crain, his son, witnessed this transaction. There are no further references to John in Knox County after 1805.
The 1807 Kaskaskia, IL. Census lists the following persons, J. Crain, Joel Crain, James Crain, and Squire Crain. It is believed that the Crain family migrated from Knox County, TN to Randolph County, IL. sometime after John sold his land there. There are no further records of John Crain in Randolph County after 1807 but there are records of a Widow Crain from 1807 until 1812. On Kaskaskia Island there was a store call Morrison?s whose records can be found in a ledger book located in the Chester City Library. The Widow Crain has purchases recorded in this book in 1807, 1809, and 1812. My conclusion is that John Crain died sometime after he arrived in Randolph County in 1807. He would have been about 67 years old. There are also records of a Susannah Crain in Randolph County at this time also. On 04 December 1809 Susannah Crain filed a lawsuit against Mary Grimes. This case was settled 22 September 1810. Since there were no other family members at this time named Susannah who would have been of the age to bring a civil suite in the Territorial Court, this has to be Susannah wife of John Crain. Sometime after her last entry in the daybook, in 1812, she died. No other records are found. She would have been about 62 years old.
The History of Randolph County written about 1850 shows Benjamin as the patriarch of the family of brothers that moved into Randolph County about 1805. The following is information that I have gathered on Benjamin Crain, who in my judgment was not the father of this family but instead, an older brother to James, Joel, Squire, John, Thomas, and William Crain.
Benjamin Crain, son of John Crain, would have been born between 1774 and 1782. This date range was determined from the ages of his children in the 1825 Randolph County Census. He would have been born in North Carolina. The family moved to Georgia about 1784. He was the first male child born to John and Susannah. These dates would also show why he was never included in the tax list in Georgia. As stated in the Wilkes County Tax Records 1785 ? 1805 by Frank Parker Hudson, a resident had to reach the age of twenty-one before he was required to file a tax return. Benjamin had not reached the age of twenty-one when the family moved from Georgia to Tennessee in 1795.
There are records of a Benjamin Crain in Knox County, TN 29 Sep 1800, Benjamin Crain commissioned as Ensign in the Knox County Company. 13 Jun 1801, Benjamin Crain wed to Jenny Shelton. Tax List of Knox Co. list a Benjamin Crain in 1804 and 1806, no land. He is listed as a jury member in 1807 and 1808 and is listed in a court case in 1808 also. There are no records in Knox County that relate to Benjamin after 1808.
In 1809 Benjamin Crain files a Servitude Record for his indentured servant, Agnes. The first entry in the Morrison?s Store Day Book is 1811. There are also entries in 1813 and 1814. Benjamin Crain buys 160 acres of land in Randolph Co., 21 Sep. 1814. There are subsequent entries in the daybook in 1815, 1818, and 1819. On 10 Sep. 1822 Benjamin married Sarah Grovesnor and according to the Kaskaskia paper, 11 Sep. 1823 Sarah left him without cause. There is a lawsuit filed against Benjamin, 20 Aug. 1827 for failure to pay a note for $84.75 that was signed 23 Sep, 1825. The Estate papers for Benjamin were signed 18 Mar. 1829 and were administered by John Crain, his son. On 23 Jan. 1830, the court received $110.58 from John Crain to settle this suit. William Morrison filed the lawsuit against Benjamin for defaulting on a bill. This would be the final record of Benjamin in Randolph County.
There will always be disagreement among family members as to the wife of John Crain and the tradition of Mildred Walton. I have uncovered no evidence to document their marriage or life together. The timing of events in the life of John Crain all point to Susannah Scott as the matriarch of the Randolph County Crain family.
