Obituary Freeport Paper c. 1917 "Joseph Addison Crain born Jan 8, 1831 @ Covington, IL. His father was John Crain, who in 1830 married Miss Indiana Higgins who died at J.A.'s birth. His ancestors were a family of Crains of English stock, some of whom had early settled in Oglethorp Co, GA where may be found traces of them in county records and possibly some traditions of the family. From Georgia in 1812, Mr. Crain's grandfather, Benjamin Crain, emigrated into Kentucky soon afterwards to the then Illinois Territory and settled upon, and improved a farm near Kaskaskia, and there reared a family of 10 children, among whom was the above mentioned John Crain, born Nov. 1, 1801, who, on his marriage as above mentioned first resided for a time at a Covington and thereafter in 1830, opened up a farm in Washington Co, near Nashville, its present county seat, and there lived and died a farmer, at the age of 71."
Portrait & Biographical Album of Stephenson County, Illinois - 1888 J.A. Crain is a well-known attorney of Freeport......... A part of the Crains, then, settled in Oglethorpe County, Georgia from whence some of the more adventurous younger generation, in the Indian War days, removed to Kentucky. In 1801 one of them, whose Christian name we are sorry to say we have forgotten wishing to withdraw himself from, to his taste, the effete civilization with which he deemed himself hemmed in, with his family of nine girls and six boys again removed to where he had more elbow room, and where Indians were plenty, into what was then the Illinois Territory. He located in Randolph County, within a few miles of the old French trading-post of Kaskaskia, at that time the seat of the Territorial Government. Among his family were Milly, Thomas and Benjamin; Milly married Francis Garner, and in the course of time the discovery of the lead mines at Galena, where fortunes were supposed to be made suddenly, drew Thomas Crain and Francis Garner with their families into northern Illinois, where Garner settled at Cherry Grove in Carroll County and Thomas Crain finally located at the place near Freeport which took the name of Crain's Grove. Both of them in 1832 were volunteers in the Black Hawk War. After 1818, in which year Illinois became a State, John Crain, one of the sons of Benjamin, removed in 1827 to Washington County..........
Joseph Addison Crain born January 8, 1831 (an only child) Covengton, Washington County, Illinois son of John and "Anna". J. A. married 1860 Miss Vennette Sweet, daughter of Hon. Martin P. Sweet. J. A. was an attorney by profession. Joseph died February 27, 1917 age 86 years. J. A. and Vennette had five children Kitty died February 1864 John Sweet, died November 1866 Vennette S. who married Carl Nelson Moller a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, Charles F. died September 1897 and his wife died January 1918. Ethel G. who married Douglas Pattterson 18 April 1900 the two eldest died in infancy.
There is an extremely lenghty obituary for Joseph Crain including a photograph of him and obits for some of his children. J. A. also attended West Point as a Cadet in 1849.
