Note from a book says Joseph was an only child but Mary J was in the household in 1850
John moved to Washington County in 1827 and lived there until he died.
Married at Covington, Ill. on February 14th by Rev. Fisher, John Crain, sheriff of Washington Co., Ill., to Miss Indiana (Anna) Higgins 3/22/1830.
John Crain, sheriff of Washington County, advertised that he had taken two runaway slaves into custody. Unless their owners called for them, paid the charges and removed them from the state, they "will be hired out as the law directs." Slave hunters such as William Rose of Nashville, Tennessee, advertised their services as agents to find runaways in Illinois.

Georgia.
Father and children ( Milly , Thomas and Benjamin Crain) removed to
Kentucky, soon afterwards to Covington, Washington County, Illinois.
Benjamin came to Illinois territory from Kentucky with father and 9
sisters and 5 brothers in 1801 Located in Randolph County.
John Crain (son of Benjamin) married Miss Indiana (Anna) Higgins.
John was born November 1, 1801. In 1827 removed to Washington County.
resided there intil his death in 1872. Held office of Sheriff, both
houses of the StateLegislature, Member of Constitional Convention of
1848. He was also the first school commissioner of Washingtom County. Sherriff from 1830 to 1836.
Jackson County, IL book says first school in Jackson County was taught by John Crain 1826-1827 who later removed to Washington Co, IL First taught in an outbuilding in section 33, then a school was erected in section 34. Kincaid Township.
John and Mary sell their interest in Benjamin's land to Cuthbert 5 Apr 1841 for $93.00
Here is a source for John Crain. Note in the probate papers of Benjamin reads " Received Kaskaskia January 12 1830 of John Crain, administrator of his deceased father, Benjamin Crain, the sum of one hundred and ninety five dollars and thirty cents, it being in full for the balance owed me by the estate of B Crain, deceased" signed Pierre Menard.

Whereas Benjamin Crain, Late of Randolph
County, deceased, died intestate, as it is said; we do, therefore,
give and grant unto you the said John Crain full power
and authority to administer all and singular the goods &
chattels, rights and credits which were of the said Benjamin
Crain, deceased, whereever the same may be found, and
to demand, collect, levy and in a legal manner require and re-
ceive all and all manner of debs due and owing to said de-
ceased, and well and faithfully to dispose of the same accor-
ding to law. And we do hereby constitute and appoint you
the said John Crain administrator of all and singular the good
and chattels, rights and credits of the said Benjamin Crain
deceased.

1878 History of Jackson County:
The first school was taught during the winter od 1826 and 1827, by John Crain, a man who subsequently rose to distinction in Washington County to which he removed. He was elected sheriff of the aboved -named county and was chosen to represent his district as State Senator. Mr Crain taught the first school in an out-building on section 33. The first school house was erected on section 34, and Mr Crain was employed to teach the first tearm.
