| Hall Shelton Crain1 |
Date of birth is a guess. I added the name Hall because it appears on a page of James Crain's book that was found in the probate records of Benjamin along with the other sons. On 17 Feb 1844, Hall Crain of Davidson Co, TN deeded to James Crain of Perry Co, IL his claim to the land that Benjamin owned. Hall being the heir of Benjamin H.S. Here's what the Smith County history book says: "Arcadia" was built in 1848 by Hass S. Crain according to family research of R.D. Brooks, a descendant of Mrs. Crain. Oldest portion is constructed of Cedar Logs said to have been rafted by river from Celina. The Crains are purported to have sold whiskey at this house, but with proper license. Samuel Ennis Ross, druggist, acquired the home in 1903. his first wife (Mary Lou Parker) altered the front porch to include columns, and had coal burning grates installed in the fireplaces. She also chose the name "Arcadia". During the flood of 1927, water from the Cumberland River and Dixon Creek stood over 2 feet deep in this house for more than a week. Watermark can be seen on plastered walls when exposed, but damage was surprisingly minimal. In 1985, workmen replacing the roof found square nails in the rafters. ....... It sounds as if your ancestor was a very good builder!!! I'll try to find a picture and send it to you. It's a beautiful home. Melissa:) Melissa Rose Smith County Heritage Museum P.O.
