[Page 49] Born in 1669, Elizabeth Ranson was the only chil d of George and Margaret (Gore) Ransome. Her father died when she was about six, and shortly thereafter her mother was married for the third time, to John Ascough. When she was grown, Elizabeth married two different Robert Dudleys, was widowed three times, and had a total of nine children.
Her first husband was Maj. Robert Dudley, born in 1647, the son of Capt . Richard Dudley and Mary Sewell. Twenty-two years older than his wife, he was bother-in-law to her uncle, Capt. James Ransone. Elizabeth's four children by Maj. Dudley were: (1) son Robert Dudley the younger, born December 23, 1691 (plaintiff in the Booth vs Dudley lawsuit); (2) daughter Elizabeth Dudley, who died June 20, 1706; (3) son George Dudley who died April 12, 1707; and (4) Avarilla Dudley, who apparently died at some point between 1702 and 1705.
Elizabeth Ranson's second husband was another Robert Dudley, "Junior", b orn in 1675 and around six years younger than his wife. Presumed to be the son or grandson of Capt. William Dudley (brother of Capt. Richard) and Elizabeth Cary, he would be a first cousin, or first cousin, once removed, to Maj. Robert. If, as claimed by some sources, Robert '"Junior" were the son of the first Robert Dudley of Virginia (another brother of Capt. Richard Dudley), he would still be the Major's first cousin. Robert Dudley "Junior's" will, dated 9 March 1709/10 and proved 7 August 1710, names his (5) son Ranson Dudley and (6) "dafter" (daughter) Avarilla Dudley, born in March of 1705/6 and christened on 31 March of that year.
Following his death, Elizabeth was married for the third time, on Septe mber 21, 1710 to Thomas Elliott. Despite her age, Elizabeth had two daughters and one son by Thomas Elliott, (7) Margaret, born January 12, 1712/13, (8) Elizabeth born March 5, 1714/15, and (9) Thomas Elliott the younger, born November 11, 1716, when Elizabeth was about forty-seven years old (assuming her birth year is correct). Thomas Elliott the elder died on November 19, 1716, only eight days after the birth of his son.
She had one known grandson, Chichester Dudley, born April 8, 1715, the s on of Robert Dudley the younger and Elizabeth Curtis of whom there seem to be no records other than his birth.

[Page 4] There is a myth that Peter's granddaughter, Elizabeth Ranson, married her first husband's son. Elizabeth's second husband was a Robert Dudley, "Junior", but this Robert was not the son of Major Robert Dudley, her first husband, but he was a cousin. In those days Junior had not yet come into general use to denote a son with the same first name as we do now and the son was usually known as "the younger."
[Page 49-50] Elizabeth Ranson's second husband was another Robert Dudley, "Junior", born in 1675 and around six years younger than his wife. Presumed to be the son or grandson of Capt. William Dudley (brother of Capt. Richard) and Elizabeth Cary, he would be a first cousin, or first cousin, once removed, to Maj. Robert.
Footnote 18: In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was common practice for a widow with small children, even a wealthy widow, to remarry very quickly, often within a week or two.
