Data included in this family line consists of personal research of the author (Harold D. Smith) as well as data acquired from other researchers and other sources. Not all information has been personally verified by the author. Therefore, researchers reviewing this data should exercise caution and should personally verify all facts. There are conflicting reports regarding this line of the Hanks (Hankes) family. Since it descends directly to US President, Abraham Lincoln, most everyone would like to be related. This has caused some data to be corrupted and some facts to be "Mis-interpreted".
The data presented by Harold D. Smith was taken from several sources, 1) "Hanks" by Gladys Hanks Johnson - CS71.H2419(1965) Library of Congress, Washington DC. 2) pamphlet entitled "Hunter Family History" compiled by an unknown author. 3) "Abraham Lincoln - The Prairie Years" by Carl Sandburg, Vol. Nbr. 1. 4) "Abraham Lincoln From his Own Words and Contemporary Accounts" Edited by Roy Edgar Appleman. 5) "Nancy Hanks - A Genealogical, Biographical and Historical Study of the Ancestry of the Mother of Abraham Lincoln" by Adin Baber. 6) "Lincoln & Greeley" by Harlan Hoyt Horner.
Thomas immigrated to Virginia circa 1654 and became a planter. Patent book 3, Va. land patents & grants show Mr. Thomas Fowke a merchant of Westmoreland Co VA transported Thomas Hanks 10 June 1654. A further entry shows Thomas was granted 100 acres in Gloucester Co VA for transporting Joane Litefoot and John Range. It was the custom at that time to grant any "transporter" 50 acres of land for each person transported (Paid their passage for an indentured period.). In Patent book 5, page 298, there is an entry where Thomas Hankes was granted 527 acres in New Kent Co VA for transporting eleven persons.
Thomas eventually owned as much as 2000 acres of timberland in Gloucester and New Kent Counties. He leased a further 800 acres from Abraham Moone on Moraticon Creek in the northern neck area. It has been reported he lost all of his land due to confiscation during the Bacon Rebellion. The Bacon Rebellion was fostered by Nathaniel Bacon and John Goode and assisted by William Drummond, a Scotsman who resided in Jamestown and Thomas Lawrence who may have been the mastermind of the entire affair. The Government was taxing the common man to the extent they couldn't afford to grow the only cash crop they had, tobacco! The local Indian tribes were up in arms and were killing planters in semi-remote areas. Bacon petitioned the governor to let him go after the Indians but the Governor said no! Before long many were in debt due to the high taxes or unable to grow their tobacco because of the Indian raids, or in disfavor of the Governor. The Governor began confiscating planters land and apportioning it out to his favorites. The tobacco planters and those dependant upon its growth and sale finally took up arms against the Government because of this oppression. It is likely Thomas Hanks was also heavily involved in the rebellion.
THOMAS HANKS - 1600 - ENGLAND
This Thomas Hanks, son of Thomas Hanks (1536) is believed to have been a soldier under Oliver Cromwell. He disappeared from England around 1643. He was supposedly capture by Charles I and transported to America. A Thomas Hancks entered and patent 100 acres of land in Gloucester Co., Va. in 1653.
