"The Hanks family has been the subject of extensive research and more than a little unfounded speculation, all because the mother ofPresident Abraham Lincoln was Nancy Hanks. Nothwithstanding all ofthe material generated on this family, no conclusive evidence has beenuncovered about the ancestry of Mary Elizabeth Hanks, believed to bethe wife of Jonathan Weldon. There is, however, considerablecurcumstantial evidence indicating that Mary Elizabeth descends fromThomas Hanks, who settled in Virginai by 1653.
Thomas Hanks was probably born before 1630 in England, possibly in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. Thomas first acquired land on February 16,1653, locating in Gloucester County, Virginia, between the Mattaponyand Rappahannock Rivers.
Thomas and Elizabeth Hanks are presumed to have had four sons: . . . "
