Individual:
Came to Metomen Township, Fond du Lac County in late August of 1844 at about 4 1/2 years of age. The Culbertson family was one of the original six families to settle in the township.By 1860 his family's farm is listed as being one of the wealthiest in Metomen according to census records.Returned to visit Crawford County, Pennsylvania where he was born with his wife Mary during the winter of 1865-66 after the unexpected death of their first born and just recently turned age one, son William. They gave the reason later as changing climate to help his back, but the timing shows it was in attempt to deal with the grief from William's death. Was injured during his service in the civil war, during maneuvers in Northern Alabama chasing rebel gorilla fighters that were remnants from General Hood's army that had fled from Atlanta earlier. While chasing the gorillas at night, he slipped and fell between two tree limbs crossing a river while in pursuit. The injury was not severe enough to keep him from remaining in action, but after the war it would worsen to the point it would cripple him.Took part in the "Siege of Atlanta" under General William Tecumseh Sherman, and General Grant's army also took part in the siege. Later followed General sherman in his famous campaign, the now infamous, "March to the Sea".Start receiving a government pension of $50 a month in November of 1882, while residing in Packwaukee Township, Marquette County, Wisconsin. He was listed as having a disease of the lungs and injury of his back resulting in paralysis. The Pension Certificate number was 220964.Elected Constable of Packwaukee Township, Marquette County, Wisconsin in December of 1879 and served as Constable till November of 1882.In a newspaper article on February 24, 1885 was the following:
25th Anniversary: Quite a number of village people have been invited to celebrate with D B Culbertson and wife, on their wedding anniversary.Marriage Ceremony performed by her father, John Bucklin Mason, the Free-Will Baptist Minister for Metomen Township at that time.
